Fleet Engineer – Commercial Vehicle Maintenance

Trumbar Truck Care Ltd, part of The Bartrum Group Ltd, are currently recruiting for a highly experienced, commercial vehicle maintenance Fleet Engineer within a respected and long-established privately-owned family transport business.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in HGV mechanics and first-hand experience of fleet procurement and vendor contracts is essential.

This is a senior position reporting to one of the Directors with regular input into board meetings. This role is integral in helping to manage Bartrums fleet of over 150 vehicles and 250 trailers as well as external customers.

The position takes responsibility for the overall management of our workshop that operates 24/7 and the successful candidate will be in charge of a team of technicians headed by a Workshop Manager.

This is a permanent, full-time position requiring a level of flexibility and will be located at our premises in Eye, Suffolk.  You will need to reliably commute to our location.

Reporting to a Director, this is a varied role that will be responsible for (including but not limited to):

  • Managing a team of technical staff members and ownership of every fleet maintenance item.
  • Hold responsibility for the procurement processes, vendor contracts and approval of requisitions
  • Responsibility for the appearance and cleanliness of the premises and its facilities and surrounding property ensuring it is free from debris and rubbish
  • Responsibility for ensuring all tools and equipment provided by Trumbar Truck Care, both electrical and mechanical are fit for purpose and maintained to the required standards that meets Health and Safety or any other related industry standard, including the removal of equipment  and any unsafe practices within the workplace
  • To be responsible for the investigation and resolve of customer complaints
  • Plan and manage for the implementation of schedules, objectives and policy changes. In order to formulate and implement these changes, you will collaborate with other managers and staff members.
  • Staff members need to comply with the company rules, safety procedures and government regulations, the FE you will monitor and oversee their operations. You will supervise employees who assign tariffs and prepare billing and scheduling
  • Financial responsibility,  ensuring expenses are consistent with the approved budgets, by monitoring the spending.
  • You will ensure your team of technical and non-technical staff undertake the necessary training required by H&S or current legislation for their position and schedule sufficient time for its completion.
  • Be responsible for the implementation of new projects and production of incident and performance reports for senior managers.
  • Working with management to review procedures & maximise customer satisfaction.
  • Attending management meetings as required
  • Ensuring compliance with all current legislation and regulation issued by government or local authorities.
  • Preparing operational reports detailing Financials, Performance, KPIs, Incidents and Accidents as required.

To succeed in this position, you will:

  • Be a quality and compliance focused individual who seeks and drives improvement both with internal department colleagues and external suppliers
  • Have come from a qualified HGV technician background, and have solid knowledge of service, maintenance and repair activities relating to heavy commercial vehicle fleet including ‘O’ Licence and all other regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Have first-hand experience of procurement for vehicles and trailers.
  • Have managed internal workshops and external maintenance suppliers, this experience must be from within the HGV maintenance industry.
  • Have a warm, engaging manner which builds strong relationships and gets the best from your staff and suppliers
  • Be a skilled engineer with a strong eye for detail and excellent technical ability. Although this role is not hands-on in terms of carrying out repair or maintenance work yourself, you must have come from this background as you will be auditing work that has been carried out and highlighting any issues as well as reviewing and approving estimates for any high-value work.
  • Have good IT skills to analyse data and identify trends.
  • Report writing experience.
